Gust A. Winkler, age 83, died peacefully at home with his loving family on January 02, 2015. The only son of the late Gustav and Josefine Winkler, Gus was born on October 16, 1931 in Canton and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School. He married Marilyn Weigand on June 19, 1954, and they shared more than 60 wonderful years together. Gus lived life to the fullest, with intelligence, humor, compassion, generosity, hard work, and a deep love of God, his family and his country. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean War. Gus worked at the Ohio Power Company, where he served for more than 30 years and retired as a supervisor. Gus had a passion for camping and the outdoors. He and Marilyn owned and operated Lake Joseph, a campground/swimming/fishing park near East Sparta for about 30 years. He was the consummate jack-of-all-trades: electrician, plumber, lumberjack, brickmason, carpenter, woodworker and much more. He loved to travel, sing and dance, and was Past President of the German Club in Canton. But nothing was more important to Gus than family. He was the foundation of a large, close family, who will cherish his memory. He is survived by his wife Marilyn, four daughters; Mary Jo King (Jim Thorp), Janie Presutto (Jerry Ashbaugh), Rosie Pollock (Ray Tombow), Lisa Groves (Dan Dyer); and his son and daughter-in-law, Matthew and Monica Winkler. He has 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, and one special four-footed furry kid, Lily. Gus felt blessed and proud of each and every one. Nothing made him happier than spending time with family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at 2p.m. at St. Philip and James Catholic Church in Canal Fulton.
