Gertrude L. Barkey, age 91 of Navarre, passed away, Thursday evening, November 15, 2007 at Aultman Hospital. She was born on July 16, 1916 in Fredericksburg, Ohio and was the daughter of the late Arthur and Josephine (Marthey) Chenevey. She was a lifelong area resident. Gertrude was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during World War II. She retired from the former Massillon State Hospital. She loved gardening and quilting and being with her family. She was a member of St. Clement’s Catholic Church. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edmund F. “Tony” Barkey, whom she married on November 28, 1946, her grandson Michael Barkey, her brothers, Archie Chenevey and Raymond Chenevey and her sister Marge Hummel. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Hal & Julie Barkey of Canal Fulton, Mary Lou and John Mitchell of Canton, Jeannie & Ron Oser of Canal Fulton, Joni & Tom Rohr of Canal Fulton, Pat Barkey of Navarre and Ed & Jill Barkey of Navarre, 17 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, her sisters, Odile Soehnlen of Beach City, Eileen (Jim) Roberts of North Royalton, Terese McElhinney of Fairlawn & her brother Harold Chenevey. The family would like to thank Flossie Williams for the good care that she showed Gertrude and her family. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday at 10:00 A.M. at St. Clement’s Catholic Church with Fr. Edward Beneleit officiating. Burial will follow in St. Genevieve Cemetery in Holmes County. Friends may call at the Arnold-Lynch Funeral Home in Massillon on Sunday from 2-5 P.M.
