Ted (Gerald Theodore) Martin from Gnadenhutten, Ohio, passed away on January 18, 2021. He was born November 24, 1934 in Gnadenhutten to Carl and Freda (Welsh) Martin. After graduating from Gnadenhutten High School in 1952, he continued his education at Marietta College, receiving a B.S. degree. While at Marietta he lettered four years in baseball, was captain his senior year, and led the Ohio Conference in batting in 1954. He earned a double major at Kent State in Education and Biology. He did post graduate work at The Ohio State University in Geology, at Rio Grand in Ecology and Chemistry, and at the University of Kentucky with special projects in skin graphing on salamanders, and embryology with Japanese Makada fish. Ted taught in eight high schools and was honored twice by the Ohio Academy of Science as outstanding teacher of the year. In addition to teaching for 35 years he served the village of Gnadenhutten 30 years as clerk-treasurer. Martin won 325 games as a high school baseball coach. In 1964 he coached the East Squad in the All Ohio Series, and served as Vice-President and Clinic Chairman of the Ohio State Baseball Coaches Association. In 1967 his team finished in the final four state tournament. He played ball 63 years until he was 75, playing in about 4000 games and winning 81%. As a player he was elected to the Cy Young Hall of Fame. He played twice in the Ohio-West Virginia games. Ted played in the Giants and Athletics minor leagues. He played softball in Florida 20 years for six different teams; Punta Gorda and Venice teams making it to the World Series twice, placing 2nd to California in 1999. In addition to playing sports, Ted hiked 1800 miles on the Appalachian Trail. For 14 years he took students to the Bahamas to introduce them to oceanography. He was an avid reader and worked in clay, gardening, and wood burning. Preceded in death by his parents and brother Bill, he is survived by seven children: Tom (Judy), Nancy (Mark) Mathews, Sally, Terry (Kim), Sandy (Dave) Gray, Tony (Angie), and Tim (Kim). Also survived by 15 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and sister Carol. There will be no services. His body has been cremated.
