George Fagert

George Fagert, age 89, passed away on Friday, March 04, 2016. He was born in Hannibal, Ohio on April 15, 1926 to the late George C. Fagert and Anna (Lawrence) Fagert. He entered the Army in August 1944 and served as a rifleman in the 90th Infantry Division of Patton's Third Army, receiving a Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct, European Theater of Operations, Victory, and the Army of Occupation Medals. To him the most valued was his Combat Infantry Badge, awarded after 30 days of combat as an infantryman. He estimated only 50% of infantrymen survived long enough to receive it. He also received a Sharpshooter's Badge. He was an escort for General George S. Patton, and a guard at the Nuremberg War Trials. He left the military as a Tech Corporal, also known as a T5. Upon his return he went to Marietta College on the GI Bill, receiving a degree in Chemical Engineering. While he was a student, he met and secretly married Lois (neé Donaghy), who as a nursing student, was not permitted to marry. After her education was complete, they became the parents of three daughters, Jill (David) Spriggs, Janet (Bart) Wetherbee, and Joy (Mark) Goebel. George had three granddaughters, Aubrey (Tarek) Madkour, Dawn Spriggs, and Julia (Marc) Beninca, four grandsons, Woodrow and Arlo Wetherbee, and Sean and Brian Goebel, and two great-grandsons, Youssef and Yassine Madkour. George worked in Research and Development at Firestone Tire and Rubber Company as a Chemical Engineer. He retired in 1988 after 37 years of service. A service to celebrate the life of George Fagert will take place on Saturday, March 12, 2016 at 1 PM at Chapel Hill Community with Chaplain Sandra Hutchinson officiating. He will be buried beside his wife at St. Joseph Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday March 11 at the Paquelet Funeral Home from 6 - 8 PM.
