Gary Lee Wells Sr., 80, of Massillon, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, with family at his side. He was born on August 31, 1942, in Massillon, Ohio, to Joseph and Georgia Wells.
During his high school years, he played on two state championship football teams for Washington High School, his alma mater in Massillon, Ohio. He graduated college from the University of Akron and began his long-time career and passion, teaching, and coaching. He had the privilege of being mentored under Bob Cummings Sr., where he helped lead the Massillon Tiger football team to a state championship in 1970. He also coached the Tiger wrestling team, and the Tigers girls track team.
He was proceeded in death by his father, Joseph “Red” Wells, mother, Georgia (Heasley, Jobin) Wells, stepmother, Catherine Wells, brother, Richard Lee Minesinger, and son, Gary Lee Wells Jr.
Gary is survived by his wife of 42 years, Leslie (Watson) Wells, children, Michelle Webb, Mark (Anna) Wells, Damien (Deja) Mays; grandchildren; Tyler (Devon), Taylor, Hunter (Izzy), Jordan, Logan, Ashlynn, Evah, and Jevon; one great-grandchild, Zay’Mere; brother, Joseph George Wells, and sister Kathy Jo Wells.
The family will be holding a private memorial per Gary’s request. A future celebration of his life will be announced at a later date.
