Francis “Frank” V. Fischer, 88, of Canton, succumbed to longstanding health ailments on December 14, 2020. He was born on January 14, 1932, in Cleveland to the late Victor and Irene (Eucher) Fischer. He was a 1949 graduate of Massillon Washington High School. Following graduation, Frank attended John Carroll University before joining the United States Army where he served as Staff Sergeant in Korea during the war. After his nearly three years serving in the 8th Army, he went to Ohio University to continue his education and received his Professional Engineer and Surveyor Licenses. Frank will be remembered most for his civil service of over 50 years. His involvement in the community included giving back to several local organizations. Frank was most active with the Massillon Knights of Columbus 554 and the American Legion Post 44. Professionally, he was a respected leader among highway and bridge engineers, including serving as O.D.O.T. Regional Director and for his 16 years of elected service as the Stark County Engineer from 1987 to his retirement in 2003. Frank was also well known for being an outstanding golfer, competing in many local and state tournaments. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 33 years, Eileen Fischer; his children Victoria Fischer, Mark (Allison) Fischer, Douglas Fischer, David (Jennifer) Fischer and Valerie (Benjamin) Youell; grandchildren, who were his pride and joy, Maria, Anna, Kasie, Kennedy, Kevin, Krystal, Molly, Elizabeth, Nicholas, Katherine and Christopher; great-grandchildren Landon, Lilliana and Layla; his two sisters Mary Irene (Herb) Seifert and Barbara Wellman; and his two loyal Westies, Chester and Riley. A public memorial Mass at St. Mary’s Catholic Church will be held on Monday, June 14th at 11:30 a.m. and committal service will follow at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery for a 2:15 inurnment. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the K of C 554, 988 Cherry Rd NW, Massillon, OH 44647, or to your favorite charity.
