Emery E.”Big Em” Cowan, age 83, of Massillon, passed away Thursday, October 21, 2010 at Affinity Medical Center. He was born January 19, 1927 in Harrisville, WV the son of the late George and Augusta (Sinnett) Cowan. Emery was a Heater for the Ford Motor Company in Canton retiring in 1981 after 34 years of service, and also served in the United States Army during W.W.II. He was a member of the Massillon V.F.W., and the Canton Horseshoe Club. He enjoyed the outdoors especially hunting and fishing. He enjoyed watching sports, and working in his garden. Emery attended the Massillon Baptist Temple. On September 11, 1948 Emery married Jackie (Perkins) having just celebrated 62 years of marriage. Also surviving are their children Monoka (Rev. Ernest) Brown of Massillon, Ed (Carol) Cowan of Mansfield, Anita (Raymond) Harple of Canton, and Dwaine (Julie) Cowan of Marion; brother Omar Cowan of Pensacola, FL; sisters Leona Ward of Grantsville, WV, and Oma Jean Wilson of Massillon; sisters-in-law Laverna, and Thelma Cowan both of Massillon; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by brothers Lawrence, Cleo, Dennis, Olin, and George Jr.; sisters Gladys Irving, and Juanita Simon; granddaughter Meredith Harple. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-5 P.M. at the Paquelet & Arnold-Lynch Funeral Home 1100 Wales Rd. NE. Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Monday at the funeral home with additional visitation from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service. Pastor Cecil Thayer will officiate. Interment will follow in Brookfield Cemetery.
