Elizabeth Caroline Betty Haverstock passed away Tuesday morning, March 7, 2006. She was 79. Born in Canton on the day after Christmas, 1926, to Van R. and Halle Maud (Howarth) Brown, Betty was a lifelong resident of Stark County. She graduated from McKinley High School in 1944 and studied nursing for the duration of the war. After the war Betty married and settled on 6th St. in Canton, later on Alden Ave., Massillon, and was a homemaker and mother of three. In 1965 Betty earned her B.A. degree in education from Kent State University and began a nearly 30 year teaching career first at Gorrell in the Massillon Public School system and then at Amherst Elementary School in Jackson Township. She was an active member of the Massillon Women's Club, Wilderness Center, DAR, NEA, and the Ohio State Teachers' Retirement Association as well as the First Monday women's group in Massillon. Betty loved to read, sew, collect Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls and was an avid student of genealogy. Betty joins her husband of 40 years, William Dale Haverstock, Sr., who died Dec. 11, 1986. She is survived by and missed by her children, William Dale Haverstock, Jr. of Massillon; Walter David, who lives with his wife Luz Zelaya and Betty's grandson, Geoffrey, in Linden, New Jersey; and Barbara Lynn of Dallas. Also surviving are brother Robert Brown of Atlanta and sister Judith (Roth) O'Neill of Canton. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Massillon Museum. A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11:00 A.M. at the Paquelet Funeral Home. Friends may call Friday from 6 – 8 P.M. and one hour before the service at the funeral home on Saturday. The burial will take place in St. Jacob’s cemetery.
