Earl R. Ferguson

d. April 5, 2018

Earl Ferguson, of Navarre, died April 5. He will have a graveside service with military honors Thursday April 12 at 10:00 a.m. at East Union Lawn Cemetery in Navarre; 236 4th Street NE, followed by a short prayer service and luncheon at 11:30 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church; 107 Sixth Street SE, Massillon 44647. Earl was devoted to his family and rarely ventured far from them, his home, and garden. He enjoyed family gatherings, including annual vacations. One of his favorite roles was that of grandfather, spending time with his grandsons and teaching them about a variety of topics. Earl cared for his wife and son through illnesses. He was committed to friends and started his own casserole ministry to make and deliver food to friends who were ill, going through difficult situations, and who looked in on him and his wife Marcia. Earl enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid vegetable gardener. He gave away some of his garden’s yield, including homemade tomato sauce. He and Marcia hosted an annual New Year’s Day dinner featuring sauerkraut made from cabbage he had grown. During gardening’s off season, Earl enjoyed woodworking for as long as he was able to, making items ranging from bird boxes to clocks. He had interest in history, politics, and cooking too. Earl was born to Sam and Minnie Ferguson in Kentucky. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War in Company B, 100 Tank Battalion Armor. He earned the rank of Technical Sergeant, received two bronze service stars, and was honorably discharged. After the war he moved to Ohio, married Marcia Sauvain, and worked as a highly-skilled tool and die maker. He spent most of his career at Portec, Inc. in Canton. His survivors include daughters Marcia (Joe), Janice (Don), and Guin (Simon), grandsons Jonah and Zak, sister Shelbia Otte, brothers-and sister-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins. His wife Marcia (2015) and son Rex (2017) proceded him as did five siblings and his parents. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations in Earl’s name to: Faith Lutheran Church 107 Sixth Street Massillon, Ohio 44647 Arrangements by Paquelet Funeral Home.
