Earl E. Smith, age 89 of Perry Township, died on Monday, August 30, 2010 at Amherst Meadows in Massillon. He was born on February 3, 1921 in Canton, Ohio and was the son of the late Harlen and Bessie (Studer) Smith. He resided in the Richville/Perry Township areas and was a 1939 graduate of Washington High School. He retired from Fleming Foods (formerly McLain Grocery Co.) after 26 years of service. He also owned and barbered at Smith Barber Shop in Richville. Earl was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II with the 1st Cavalry Division in the South Pacific. He is a member and former organist of the Clinton Lodge #47 F.&A.M., the Scottish Rite, Valley of Canton, the Hiram Chapter # 18. Tadmor Shrine of Akron, the Massillon Shrine Club, American Legion Post 221, Teamsters #92 Retiree Club and was a former member of AARP # 3336. Along with his parents, Earl was preceded in death by his sisters, Gladys Neel and Doris Snyder Stano. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ella (Weigand) Smith, his daughter Krista Smith Gibson of Perry Township, three sons, Kim of Illinois, Keith of Florida and Kevin of Canton, 4 grandchildren and his sister, Norma Stantz of Navarre. A service to celebrate Earl’s life will take place on Friday at the Paquelet & Arnold-Lynch Funeral Home at 11:00 A.M. with Dr. Darrell Holmes officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Hills Burial Park. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6-8 P.M. and one hour prior to the service on Friday. The Clinton Lodge will hold a Masonic service on Thursday at 5:15 P.M. The family would like to thank the staff at Amherst Meadows and In-House Hospice for the care and attention they gave to Earl.
