Dorothy Marian (Slinger) Byers

Dorothy Marian (Slinger) Byers of Massillon, passed away Wednesday evening, June14, 2006 at Chapel Hill Community following a lengthy illness. Born on December 21, 1910, daughter of Nora (Evans) Slinger (1887-1964) and Andrew M. Slinger(1884 - 1970). Mrs. Byers was born and raised in Massillon, graduating from Washington High School in 1928. She was a stenographer for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. for five years. She married Herbert L. Byers of Canton on September 2, 1935. Mr Byers died in 1985. While in Massillon, Mrs. Byers worked at secretarial positions, and at the First National Bank in Massillon. She also joined and was active in Delta Sigma Kappa, a philanthropic sorority which provided assistance to underprivileged children. The Byers family moved to Akron (Portage Lakes) in 1954, and Mrs. Byers worked initially as an on call stenographer at Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. as well as freelancing for other companies, and then joined the Akron office of the Social Security Administration as a service representative. She retired from her position as a claims representative in 1972. In 1974, Mr. and Mrs. Byers retired to Clearwater, Florida, returning to the Massillon area in 1984. Mrs. Byers lived at Golden Villas, 1600 First Street, N.E. until she moved in to the Regency retirement center on Whipple Road, Canton, Ohio. She moved to the Chapel Hill Community in 2002. Mrs. Byers was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Massillon, Ohio. Mrs. Byers is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, James B. and Jane Byers of Alexandria, Virginia; one grandson, James R Byers of Altus, Oklahoma; and a brother, Dr. William N. Slinger of Homosassa, Florida. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Slinger of Detroit, Michigan, and Robert Slinger of Massillon, Ohio; a sister, Mary Alice Swaney of Detroit Michigan; and a twin sister, Doris, who died in infancy. Funeral services celebrating Dorothy’s life will be held Saturday, June 24, 2006 at 11:00 AM at Wesley United Methodist Church with Rev. Ken Kubichek officiating. Family will receive friends Friday from 7:00 – 9:00 PM at the Paquelet Funeral Home, 1100 Wales Road NE, Massillon, and 1 hour prior to the services Saturday at Wesley United Methodist Church. Interment will take place at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens following the services.
