Doris I. McCloud age 90 of Massillon passed away Wednesday January 31, 2007 at the Hospice Care Center in Summit County after a short illness. She was born on the family dairy farm west of Marshallville, OH on the 18thof June 1916, the second of five children of Otto L. & Rosa (Froelich) Thomas. She graduated from Orrville High School in 1934, and then went on to earn a Teachers Certificate at Kent State University. Later she earned her Bachelors Degree from Malone College, and was a member of the American Association of University Women. Her first teaching job was in a two room school at North Lawrence. Later she taught at Marshallville and for 26 years taught first grade at L.E. York Elementary School in Massillon. She took great pride and pleasure at getting the little Tigers interested in reading and writing, for example, by walking to the stadium, where the kids got to run the length of the field, and on return to the classroom to write a story about their experience. She was active in the Massillon Teachers Association. After retirement in June 1982 she enjoyed traveling, reading, bird watching and listening to books on tape. Doris was an active member of St. Johns United Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband George in 1962, and by brothers Carl, Paul, Victor and James. Surviving are two sons and a daughter in law: Thomas of Frederick, MD and Richard & Hanna of North Topsail Beach, NC; sister in law Marilyn Thomas of Orrville, brother in law Stanley McCloud of Akron and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Service will be 10:30 AM Saturday at the Paquelet Funeral Home in Massillon, the Rev. Bob Moore will officiate. Burial will be at Crown Hill Cemetery in Orrville. Friends may call Friday 5-7 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Doris McCloud Reading Fund for Little Tigers at the Massillon Area Credit Union, P.O.
