Donald Paul Berger, age 83 passed away peacefully on August 19, 2014 from pancreatic cancer in Atlanta, GA. Donald was born in Massillon Ohio on April 6, 1931. He was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Marion Berger and his daughter Hannah Moore. After graduating from Washington High School, Donald attended Wooster College and then The Juilliard School. He was drafted into the Army in 1950 and was stationed in Tokyo, Japan where he met his wife Kaori. After leaving the Army, he graduated from Juilliard and Columbia University Teachers College. In 1959 he moved to Tokyo Japan where he taught choral music at The American School in Japan for 36 years. He became a scholar of Japanese music, and published several books and articles on the subject. In 1991 he earned his PH.D in Music Education from Kent State University. Since his retirement, Donald lived in Brookings, Oregon and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and enjoyed his trips to France to learn Berger family history and the French language. He also pursued one of his passions by creating numerous woodcarvings from exotic woods. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Kaori, daughter Eva Taylor, sons in law Steve Taylor and Steve Moore, and grandsons, David Moore, Ken Taylor and Tim Taylor. Graveside service will be held at Newman Creek Cemetery in North Lawrence, Ohio on September 10, 2015 at 10:30AM.
