Donald Edmund Ahlstrom, age 85 of Massillon, passed away March 2, 2010. Don was born January 11, 1925 in Jamestown, NY to the late Edmund & Doris (Johnson) Ahlstrom. During World War II he served in the Navy for forty two months in the South Pacific. After the war he attended and graduated from Baldwin-Wallace College. In 1949 he married Sue Weirich of Massillon and joined The Brown Lumber Company in 1953. He was promoted to President in 1971 and retired in 1995. He was also a member of the Board of Directors at the former First Savings & Loan Assoc. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and served on numerous committees. Don was an avid Tiger fan, a past president of the Tiger Booster Club (1958), the announcer at Tiger stadium (1963-1979) and a field spotter for the Cleveland Browns (1953–1963). His civic activities included; past president and board member of the Massillon Club, member of the Massillon Development Foundation, a long time member of Massillon Rotary, member of the American Legion #221, BPOE #441 and a supporter of Boy Scout Troop #916. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Mark Weirich Ahlstrom (1957) and grandson, Gregory D. Ahlstrom Jr. (1994). He is survived by his wife, Suzanne (Weirich) Ahlstrom, with whom he shared 60 years of marriage on December 28th. They have three surviving children and daughters-in-law, Greg & Judy Ahlstrom of Greenville, SC, Bob & Lisa Ahlstrom of Marco Island, FL, Rick & Jeanne Ahlstrom of Columbus, OH; five grandchildren, Christopher Ahlstrom, Sam Ahlstrom, Cate Ahlstrom, Emily (Jack) Justice, Lucas Ahlstrom; three great grandchildren and one sister from Jamestown, NY, Joyce Olson. Memorial service will be 11 AM Saturday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Massillon with his pastors, Rev. Mark Oster and Rev. Robert Brigham officiating. Interment will be Monday. The family will receive their friends from 10 AM until the service at the church on Saturday. Memorials can be made in Don’s name to St. Paul’s Building Fund or Hospice of Stark County.
