David J. Putts, Jr., age 88, of Massillon, passed away Friday, October 18, 2013. David was born on March 1, 1925 in Oak Park, IL the son of David and Florence (Tepper) Putts. Upon graduating from high school he was selected for the V-12 Program of the U.S. Marine Corps which enabled him to attend the University of Miami of Ohio. He served during WWII in the Pacific Theater. He finished his education at the Miami of Ohio where he received his teaching degree. David's first coaching job was when he came to Massillon and coached football under Chuck Mather at Washington High School from 1948-1954. He then went with Chuck Mather and coached at the University of Kansas. He returned to Massillon and was a representative at I.D.S. for 10 years. Later he returned to coaching and teaching at both Glenwood and Glen Oak High School. He retired in 1990. David was a member of the Hall of Fame luncheon Club. He enjoyed playing golf with friends and was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his sister June Brundage. He is survived by his loving wife Joan (Getz) Putts whom he married on October 7, 1983; his children and their spouses, Emily (Jim) Maas, and Laura (Jack) Morris; his step-children, Kevin Gump and Gregg (Jenny) Gump; and his grandchildren Kobie Gump and Jane Mai Ling Maas. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in Massillon. Rev. Nancy Bacon will be Officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the Paquelet Funeral Home in Massillon on Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. and one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to either the Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, or the Building Fund at Christ Lutheran Church.
