Charles Gerstenmaier 1935-2017, age 82 passed away on February 2, 2017 with his loving family by his side. Born in Massillon, Ohio to John and Nellie Gerstenmaier, Chuck graduated from Washington High School in 1952. He went on to get his BA in Chemistry at Miami University where he met the love of his life, Patricia Rodgers, at his Phi Kappa Tau fraternity party. After graduation Chuck moved to Akron where he spent his entire professional career in the rubber and carbon black industry. He worked for Goodyear, General Tire and finally Sid Richardson Carbon Company, retiring after 44 years. Chuck was also an active member of ASTM and the Akron Rubber Group, serving in many capacities including Chairman. He was also a member of Zion United Church of Christ. Chuck loved his career, but nothing was more important to him than his family. Chuck and Pat married shortly after he began working in Akron. Together, they built a strong and loving relationship, and were married for nearly 60 years. During that time they raised 6 children with whom they visited much of the United States and Canada, tent camping and traveling via RV. The grandest family vacation was an Alaskan Cruise to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary together with their children and their spouses, and 15 of their grandchildren. Chuck and Pat also had the thrill of traveling to 33 countries making many friends along the way. Chuck was an outstanding father and friend to his kids and grandchildren. He tutored with homework, was involved in Indian Guides, coached little league baseball and taught Sunday School. He was an encourager, sharer of wisdom, keeper of peace. Most of all he was an incredible role model as a husband. His love and devotion were visible in the countless romantic gestures, both big and small he bestowed upon their mother. In recent weeks Pat told him he made all her dreams come true. He told Pat on his final day, "We've had a great ride." Thanks to his iPhone, Chuck was able to keep in contact with his many friends. He will truly be missed. Charles is survived by his wife Patricia; daughter Diane (Andrew) Barbin, Kate, Sarah and Jacob; son David (Meril) Gerstenmaier, Chip and Jack; daughter Debra (Conrad) Henninger Anna, Charles, Jane and Ellie; daughter Dana (Brian) Stratton, Abby, Emme and Chloe; son Daniel (Christina) Gerstenmaier, Joe and Hattie; daughter Denise (Scott) Hyde, Benjamin, Olivia and William; great grandchildren Ruby and Jaxon; and his beloved pets Grady and Lulu.
