Carol Meyer, 86, of Massillon, Ohio went home to be with the Lord on October 13 ,2023.
She was born in 1937 in Fairmont, WV to Hazel and James R. Hartley.
Carol attended West Fairmont High School before studying Physical Education at Fairmont State College. She received her Master’s degree from The College of Mount St. Joseph in 1986. She retired from Perry High School in 1993.
She is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Robert L. Meyer.
Carol and Bob were married June 18, 1976.
She is also survived by daughters Lorie(Jim) Strader, Brenda(Scott) Proctor,
Joan(Ted) Hendicks, Ellen(Rick) Ramsey; sons Pat(Marilee) Meyer, Ron( Amy) Henderson.
Grandchildren Kathleen, Jennifer, Sarah, Ali, Andrea, Ellen, Leia ,Ryan, Katie, Chris, Lisa, Samantha, Amanda, Zach, Eli, Sam, Abby. She is also survived by nineteen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Carol was passionate about learning and teaching in her roles as coach/teacher at Perry Local Schools. She was instrumental in the establishment of the women's basketball program.
She created an innovative phys-ed curriculum that included self-defense, slimnastics, and racquetball. She has coached cheerleading, track, and basketball being named Stark County Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year in 1975-76. She loved the time she spent with her students in the Teen Institute drug prevention program. She was inducted into the Perry Hall of Fame in 2017 and named Women’s Coaching Pioneer.
After her retirement, Carol continued her role of teacher as Christian Education Director at First Baptist Church of Massillon. She was named Teacher of the Year through the American Baptist Association of Ohio. She co-directed many Easter and Christmas dramas, musicals, and dinner theaters with her daughter, Lorie.
Carol also attended classes through Moody Bible Institute and the American Baptist Lay Pastor Program receiving her Pastor’s License in June 2006.
She attended beauty school receiving her beautician's license. She loved to sing and dance and was active with Lincoln Ladies and Chorus for a Cause. She also enjoyed painting with her instructor, Carol Pershing. One of her favorite places to work was the Massillon Women’s Club.
She also was a volunteer at The Attic and it has been rumored that she was also their best customer.
Many have shared that Carol’s continual striving for excellence permeated everything that she touched. This standard of excellence and her deep love of the Lord will be a legacy that has touched those left behind and will last for generations.
Calling hours are Friday, October 20, 6-8 PM. at Paquelet Funeral Home 1100 Wales Rd Massillon. Services will be 11:00 AM Saturday October 21 at the funeral home with viewing one hour prior.
