Carol A. Phillips passed away on 01/11/2014 after a courageous battle to overcome complications following a routine medical procedure in August. Our mom was a selfless survivor who overcame breast cancer more than 25 years ago. She showed amazing strength and determination to endure in the face of every medical obstacle that was thrown at her. Starting with four surgeries in twelve days, over a month in surgical intensive care and more than a month in acute care, she consistently defied the odds over her final six months. Our mom continued on her way back to health with an extended stay in a local rehab center. She learned to breathe on her own again, progressed to eating solid foods, and had begun therapy that had her beginning to walk again. Unfortunately this winter she encountered a couple of set-backs that she was ultimately unable to overcome. We are all so proud of our mom and how hard she fought. Our mom was a lifelong resident of the Massillon area and a graduate of Washington High School. She was an avid reader and a die-hard Cleveland Indians fan. Our mom loved to travel and over the last few years she was able to visit Hawaii twice, visit lifelong friends in California and enjoy various other trips with her friends and family. Over the past several years she really enjoyed tracking the international space station with her neighborhood friends. Every time we see the space station streaking across our night sky in the future we will all think of our mom. Our mom was preceded in death by the love of her life, our dad Thomas L. Phillips, her parents Ruth and Paul Yost and her brother Ray. Carol is survived by her three sons and their wives; Craig and Sue, Darren and Lisa, Dave and Laurie as well as by her 4 grandchildren, Courtney, Ryan, Carly and Mitchell who all will miss her dearly. A celebration of Carol's life will be held at Paquelet Funeral Home in Massillon on Thursday, January 16th at 11:00AM. Celebrant Kevin O'Brien will be officiating. Entombment will be at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens where she will be reunited with our dad. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 15th from 5:00-7:00PM and again one hour before the service on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in our mom's name to the Astoria Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Canton, OH to the attn: Business Office for activities department.
