Carl E. “Mac” McCalla, Jr., age 77 of Massillon, died on Sunday, September 27, 2008. He was born on January 16, 1931 in Lancaster, Ohio and was the son of the late Carl E. McCalla, Sr.and Leah (Denny) McCalla Freeman. He was a Massillon resident since 1961. In 1948, Carl enlisted in the U.S. Navy and retired after 20 years of service. Following his retirement, he made a career in H.V.A.C. and in his later years, he taught H.V.A.C. at Stark State Technical College. He was a member of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, the Clinton Lodge, F. & A.M. #47, the Scottish Rite, Valley of Canton, Al Koran Shrine and the Massillon Shrine Club. He remained active with the Naval Reserves. He is survived by his wife, Gloria E. (Bergstrand) McCalla, whom he married on June 26, 1952, his children and their spouses, Carla & Timothy Moore of Massillon and Erick & Holly McCalla of Canton, his grandchildren, Benjamin Berner, Nicholas McCalla, Ericka (Kipp) Huntsberger, Chauncey Moore and Holli Moore and his great grandchildren, Madison Berner and Brendan Moore. A memorial service will take place on Friday at 11:00 A.M. at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, (226 Third St. S.E.) with Reverend Henry Harris officiating. The family will receive friends in the parish hall at the church one hour prior to the service.
