Bessie Marciel Shonk, age 88 of Massillon, passed away Monday, October 31, 2005 at the Hospitality House in Massillon following a brief illness. She was born on February 8, 1917 in Sebring, Ohio and was the daughter of the late George & Angie (Linn) Shonk. One of 18 children, she was preceded in death by Grace, Mabel, Dora, Virgil, Gladys, Irene, Ethel, Clara, Woodrow, Blain, Henry, Earl, Edna and Ruby Louise. Bessie leaves behind her sisters Velda and Helen. Bessie was a caretaker all of her life. Her parents made their home with her. She spent 26 years caring for Dr. George Textor and his wife Zella. At the age of 54 she became a licensed practical nurse and worked at the Hospitality House and Shady Lawn until she retired. Bessie loved God and her church. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Massillon for 50 years, its Martha Circle and her Amicitia Class. She was always ready to lend a hand to make hard tack candy, bake a pie or help with rummage sales. Bessie was never a complainer, she was always a trooper. She will be missed by her circle of church friends, her west side neighbors, her many nieces and nephews and all the kind people who helped her through the last few years. Funeral services celebrating Bessie’s life will be on Thursday at 11:00 A.M. at the Arnold-Lynch Funeral Home with Rev. Leslie Peine officiating. Interment will follow in Newman Cemetery. Friends may call at the Arnold-Lynch Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M.
