Audrey J. Snowden went home to be with the Lord, on Friday, December 31, 2021. She was born on February 04, 1923, in Massillon, Ohio to Carl and Ruth Sims. She graduated from Washington High School in Massillon in 1939. Audrey attended Massillon City Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1959. She then completed her education at Akron University graduating in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. Audrey married the late Herbert E. Snowden, Sr. on May 25, 1941, they were married for 54 years, and she is the mother of the late Herbert E. Snowden Jr. Audrey’s nursing career began in 1959 at Massillon Community Hospital, where she held the position of Assistant Head Nurse; she was promoted to afternoon supervisor in 1962, a position she held until 1980. In 1980, she became the Director of Medical Nursing Service and worked faithfully in the position until 1984. Audrey was honored through the years with certificates, awards, and honors include; Rookie of the Year; Massillon YM/YW Membership Drive (1987); Ohio House of Representatives, presented by Johnny Maier (1991); Audrey Snowden Day with a Proclamation presented by the Office of the Mayor (1993); Washington High School offered courses of accounting to Senior Citizens, she passed with all A’s (1995); Christian Hall of Fame at Shiloh Baptist Church, Massillon, OH (1997); Honoree of the Fourth Annual Christian Hall of Faith Banquet and Awards Ceremony (2001); Honored by the Kitchen Committee of Shiloh Baptist Church, Massillon, OH for her many years of dedication (2005). She is a past board member of: The American Cancer Society, Massillon YMCA/YWCA; Mental Health of Western Stark County; Family Counseling Services; Massillon City Board of Health; Massillon Urban League; Neighborhood Housing Services of Massillon; Westark Family Services, Inc.; Massillon Women’s Bowling Association; and Stark County Legal aid Society. She was also a past volunteer, working as a Patient Advocate at Massillon Community Hospital. She had been on the board for Community Legal Aid Services, Inc., her other affiliations included The Red Chapeau Divas; The Southeast Gang; a musician for Christian Women United of Massillon. Audrey was a faithful member of Shiloh Baptist Church for 73 years. She was the founder of the Morning Circle, where monies raised were used to pay off some of the bills during Rev. Dodson’s administration. She had served at Shiloh as a church trustee, asst. church secretary, and minister of music for over 55 years. Her social activities and interests are music, traveling, bowling, volunteering, and helping others. Audrey leaves to cherish her memory her sister Kernola Arnold; her Great-niece and special caretaker Quiana Gulley; special nieces Renee Reynolds, Cheryl (Billy) Martin and special nephew Keith Snowden; her Great-nephews Damon Staples, William Martin, and Jonathan Reed; great-nieces Clarice (James) McGuire, Nicole Martin, and Tamia Gulley; 5 Great-Great nephews, 8 Great-Great nieces, 5 Great-Great-Great nephews, and 3 Great-Great-Great nieces and a host of family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Herbert Snowden Sr.; her son Herbert Snowden, Jr.; her sister Sallie Staples; and her niece Audrey Livingston. A Home Going Celebration will be held at Shiloh Baptist Church, 1111 Third Street SE, Massillon, OH 44646, on Saturday, January 08, 2022, at 11 a.m. Reverend Anthony Robinson will be officiating. The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will take place at Sunset Hills Memory Gardens – 7920 Frank Avenue NW, North Canton, OH 44720.
