Alice Marie Myers Somogy, 85, was born to Samuel and Ethel (Kleckner) Myers on December 6, 1928. She passed away October 14th and will be laid to rest beside her husband, John at Sixteen Cemetery on State Rt. 93 in Tuscarawas Township. The Myers farm, where Alice was born, was part of the Community of Sixteen. Alice lived there until the family moved to Massillon where she attended Lorin Andrews and graduated from Washington High School in 1946. Alice played clarinet in the W.H.S. band under George Bird and enjoyed both musical and theatrical performances throughout her life, having studied piano under her mother's tutelage. As a child Alice enjoyed Sunday car rides where she and her sister would ride in a rumble seat. Once she bounced out going over a bump and had to chase the vehicle, yelling until her parents stopped. Despite the event, she continued to love car rides, especially to the Ohio River as an adult, where she would often enjoy having lunch. Alice was married in 1947 to John Michael Somogy, who served during WWII on the U.S.S. Bunker Hill. After raising their three children she attended Stark State and worked at The Timken Co. for over 30 years, retiring in 2004. After that Alice was a volunteer tutor in Massillon's A.B.L.E. adult education program for several years. John and Alice Somogy were long-standing Tiger fans, holding season tickets since the 70's. Always a lover of animals, Alice recalled her mother's ordering a 'Christian' parrot for her two young girls. She had "Polly" for over half a century. A longtime member of Wesley Methodist Church on Main, Alice attended Myers United Church of Christ with her nephew, Sam, in the later years. Throughout her life, Alice remained an avid reader and gardener. Although fearful of flying, she took trains to visit friends in Nevada and especially enjoyed rides to Cape Cod to see the ocean. She was preceded in death by her husband John, sisters, Vina (Stranger) and Daisy (Carter), and brothers, William, Frederick, and Andrew. Also her similarly auburn-haired nieces, Winnie (Carter Sarno) and June (Aeschilmann). Alice is survived by her daughter, Vickie Whiting, with whom she was living, as well her son, John, and daughter, Patricia Lowenberg, who reside in Wooster and in Connecticut respectively. Also by her grandsons, Brian, and Kevin Lowenberg, and Derek and Wesley Somogy, numerous nieces, nephews, and friends, as well as her beloved cats and parrot. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 17, 2014 at 10 a.m. at the Paquelet Funeral Home. Pastor Mary Ann Jopperi will be officiating. Burial will follow at Sixteen Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Stark County Humane Society, P.O. Box 7077, Canton, Ohio 44705.
