Alfred “Butch” Lewis Groom, age 72, passed away in his residence in Massillon, Ohio on July 10, 2018. He leaves behind his dedicated wife, Patty Joanne (Boley) Groom and seven children: Elaine Marie (Groom) Noble, Gary Scott Groom, Kelly Renee Lea Groom, Paul Ellis Avery, (Jennifer Joy Peterson), Maria Alison Groom, (Geoffrey Raymond Piero). Beloved mother-in-law, Emma Steele; Beloved sisters and brother-in-laws, Peggy Godfrey (Mark), Holly Ralston (Jim), David Boley (Lee), and Chuck Boley (Teresa). A total of 9 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, 33 nieces and nephews, and 8 great-nieces and nephews follow in Alfred’s footsteps. He was the first of his siblings to be born at the Timken Mercy Hospital on October 28, 1945 to Silvie Alvin Groom and Cecile Oriole (Johnson) Groom of Canton, Ohio. Siblings Melford Alvin Groom, Marjorie Elizabeth (Groom) Keane and Josephine Alba (Groom) Bolanz, whom all preceded him in death. In 1964, his career started in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War serving on the USS Galveston and the USS Princeton as a boilerman. He was honorably discharged in 1968 in Long Beach, California. In the late 1970’s, Alfred established his career at Volvo White GM Heavy Truck Corporation in Orrville, Ohio until he retired in 2006. Alfred enjoyed numerous hobbies such as cooking up a batch of spaghetti sauce and hand-rolled meatballs, artistically painting ceramics, playing Euchre, front porch sitting, and spending much of his time with his family and neighbors, Chuck and Donna Vogley. He loved strawberry swirl ice cream and 50’s and 60’s music, along with those classic cars. Al was a generous, kind, and gentle man for everyone who knew him. If you needed help, he was right there offering his skilled hands to fix just about anything. If you needed someone to talk to, his door was always open. Al’s joyful smile brightened everyone’s life. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the Paquelet Funeral Home in Massillon. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 13th at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Jonathan Holmes officiating. Burial will take place at Rosehill Memorial Gardens where military rites will be held. Following the burial, the family would like to invite everyone to Parkside Church, Green Campus, 4520 S. Arlington Rd., Uniontown, Ohio 44685, for food and fellowship.
