Retired electrician and 40-year railroader, Joseph K. Herman Sr. departed this life on September 23, 2023. Joe passed peacefully surrounded by his family.
Joe received his Associates Degree from Dean Tech as an Electrical Technician. His passion for working with vehicles led him to begin his railroading career with the Monongahela Connecting Railway Company in Pittsburgh, where he served as an electrician. Joe believed a strong work ethic was important and always took great pride in the work that he did. During his career he earned the respect of his peers and, for a period of time, served as a Superintendent of Locomotive Maintenance. Known by some as “Sparky,” Joe finished his career with CSX in Cleveland, Ohio.
Joe enjoyed his hard earned retirement years living at home in Canton, Ohio. He enjoyed a simple life of "putzing around the house” and "watching the grass grow." His idea of “putzing around” was to meticulously maintain his vehicles and home. He always offered a helping hand to his family, neighbors, friends and anyone else that asked. Joe’s character and integrity while speaking about and interacting with others was appreciated by all who knew him well. He enjoyed cooking and even created a secret barbecue sauce recipe that is “almost world famous.” He also loved talking politics, classic cars, woodworking and history (specifically World War II).
Joe is survived by his best friend and life partner Jean E. Whitlock, his sons, Joseph, James, and Robert, his 6 grandchildren, his brother Michael, his sister Carol, a niece, a nephew, and numerous cousins.
As per his final wishes, there will be no funeral services, viewing or public burial. Joe’s family asks that you share a drink and fond memory of Joe with one of your own family members or a loved one.
