Glenn Edwin Hawkins, born October 16, 1943, went to be with his heavenly Father on Tuesday, January 3rd at the age of 79.
Born to the late Jack & Frona Hawkins in Doniphan, MO, the family moved to Massillon, OH in 1952 where Jack became the first full-time minister for the Massillon Church of Christ. They later moved to Newark, OH where Glenn graduated from Newark High School in 1961.
In the fall of 1961, Glenn attended Ohio Valley Christian College in Parkersburg, WV where he met the love of his life and wife of 57 years, Hope Shutts Hawkins. Glenn & Hope graduated from Harding University in Searcy, AR in the spring of 1965 and were married in June of that year.
Glenn began his career as a preacher of the gospel and worked with a variety of congregations in MO & TN. He received his master’s degree in Apologetics from the Harding Graduate School of Religion in the spring of 1975. In July of that year, he began serving as the minister of the Massillon Church of Christ where he served faithfully until his passing.
Glenn spent over 47 years in Massillon and was honored to serve as the minister of the Massillon Church of Christ where over the years he conducted a weekly radio show, wrote a weekly column for the Massillon newspaper, taught weekly bible classes, served as guest speaker at numerous lectureships, served as a teacher at Ohio Valley Christian College and contributed numerous writings to the Warren Christian Apologetics Center. He loved the Massillon Tigers, the Ohio State Buckeyes, golf, singing, and most of all his family, and countless friends.
Glenn is survived by his wife Hope, son Kenny (Susan) and granddaughter Addison of Canton, GA, son Adam of Massillon, sister Janice Bell (Glenn), sisters-in-law Judy Hughes (Ronnie) and Melva Farris, nephews Mark, Daniel, Ronald, Ryan, Lewis and nieces Alma and Melinda.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 8 from 2:00 – 5:00pm at the Massillon Church of Christ located at 915 State Ave NE, followed by a service on Monday, January 9 at 11:00am, also at the church.
