George Turkal age 80 of Jackson Twp. passed away Tuesday. George was born October 20, 1924 in Massillon to the late Peter & Dora Turkal. He was a 1943 graduate of Washington High School and attended Kent State University. During WW II he served with the 32nd Armored Regiment, 3rd Armored Division and rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was awarded 5 Battle Stars for: Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. George was a service manager at several auto dealers in Massillon. In 1973 he started as an Auto Tech Teacher with the Plain Schools and retired in 1992. George will be remembered for his personal generosity and congenial manner. For many years he was active with the American Heart Association and participated in the Heart Walk. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers: John Turkal in 2003, Ernest ‘Etch’ Turkal in 1976. He is survived by: Wife Norma Jean (Pettay) Turkal of the residence with whom he would have shared 55 years of marriage on August 12th Son Thomas G. Turkal of Jackson Twp. Brother Carl Michael Turkal of Massillon A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 A. M. Friday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Burial will be at Sunset Hills Burial Park. Friends may call Friday from 9:15 AM until the Mass at the church on Friday. The family would appreciate contributions to the American Heart Association.
