Dr. A. W. Pence, 98, of Massillon, passed away Thursday, February 20, 2014 at Aultman Compassionate Care. Allan was born on June 7, 1915 in St. Paris, Ohio the son of the late Harold and Marguerite (Lee) Pence. Allan was a United States Army Colonel and served our country during WWII in both the European and African Conflicts. He studied at Case Western Reserve, Harvard, Yale and several other universities. Allan had a P.H.D., D.D.S., and D.M.D. He also received a doctorate in math and held a degree in engineering. Allan had practices in both Cleveland and New Philadelphia. He was a member of the American Legion Post #221, Blinded American Veterans, the Stark Co. Dental Society, American Dental Assoc., Clinton Lodge #47 F. & A.M., York Rite, Tadmor Lodge, and Shriners. Dr. Pence received the 'Gold Honor Award' for outstanding service in Masonry from the Soverign College of North America. He had a lifetime membership in the Disabled American Veterans Association – Murphy Burelli Chapter # 7 – Denver. He was a lifetime member of the New Philadelphia Elks. Allan attended Faith Community Fellowship Church. In 1954 he won the 'Cleveland Open' golf tournament where he shot a 67. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and would go on fishing trips to Canada with his Masonic friends. Allan also enjoyed gardening and loved his John Deere tractor. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his brother Harold Lee Pence He is survived by his wife, Sara Jane 'Sally' (Henze) Pence, whom he married on November 9, 1963; his brother, Rodney Pence of Ft. Meyers, FL; his step-sister, Barbara (Jim) Zook of St. Paris, Ohio; his nephew, Bruce (Debra) Henze of Jackson Twp.; his nieces, Janet (Dan) Dela Giustina of Morgantown WV, and Pamela (Rick) Sacrider of Vilas NC. A Celebration of Allan's life will be held on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at 12:00 P.M. at the Paquelet & Arnold-Lynch Funeral Home. Dr. David Kimberly of Faith Community Fellowship will be Officiating. His final resting place will follow at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11- 12 P.M. before the service. Clinton Lodge #47 F. &A.M. will have a Masonic service at 10:45 A.M.
